Voluntary swallowing
- Oral preparatory phase: suckling, chewing, mixing food + saliva, forming bolus
- Oral phase: upright posture, closing mandible, elevating tongue to press bolus on uvula
Involuntary swallowing
- Swallowing reflex happens when bolus reaches uvula
- Soft palate elevates
- Nasopharynx-oropharynx closed by superior constrictor
- Superior constrictor, middle constrictor and inferior constrictor in sequence
- Thyroid meets epiglottis: epiglottis closes, pharynx widens and shortens
