Structure/Function:M Flashcards
what is the scrotum and what does it do
(4 things)
- multilayer pouch
- contains, protects, and keeps the testes cool
- thin outermost layer
- has sweat glands
second layer of the scrotum
(3)
- muscle and fibrous tissue
- contracts with cold and sexual arousal
- wrinkled when contracted
cryptochidism
- failure to descend
- can correct itself
- reproductive problems and illness
design features of the scrotum to keep them cool
(4)
- lack of fat
- small blood vessels near the surface
- sweat glands
- vascular heat exchange
the scrotum is design to
1. cool the testies
2. warm the testies
3. keep it at a constant temp
3.keep it at a constant temp
what is the tunica albuginea
tight, white, inelastic fibrous sheath that wraps around the testes
mumps
expains the testes and crushes them from the inside out
seminiferous tubules
subdivided lobes that store the sperm
spermatogenesis
- mature sperm is 1/2 the genetic material
male sex hormones
generically known
androgens
Leydig’s cells
interstitial cells
- between seminiferous tubules
- testosterone and other hormones are created there
epididymis
and the selection chamber
- acts as storage (for 6 weeks)
- selection chamber (where the sperm gets absorbed)
vas deferens
- firm cord that connects to the 2 ejaculatory ducts
urethra
- transports sperm
- transports urine
prostate gland
- size/shape of a large chestnut
- pt. of seminal fluid
seminal fluid
- neutralizes acidity of the vigina
- helps transports the sperm
seminal vesicles
- substance initiates movement in sperm
cowper’s gland
bulbourethral glands
- alkaline, clear, sticky substance
- neutralizes acidty of urethra
- normally produces no sperm, but sometomes gets “ninja sperm”
The structure which connects the epidiymis and the ejaculatory duct is the
1. prostate
2. urethra
3. vas deferens
4. semi. tubules
3.vas def
the penis has 3 parallel cylinders, what are they
2 cavernous bodies and 1 spongy body
the penis’ irregular cavities
(3)
- engorged with blood when aroused
- the fibers will stiffen the penis
- it can break the fibers with sudden force
glans
- smooth, round head
- lots of nerve endings
coronal ridge
the risen pt of the penis between the glans and the shaft
frenulum
the strip connecting the glans to the body of the penis
foreskin
strech type, circumcision, smegma
- ordinarily retractable
- too tight, then cut it (phimosis)
- circumcision (ritual)
- smegma (chessy desposit when foreskin not cleaned)
penis shape and size can vary, what are the 3 main shapes?
- blunt
- bottle
- prow
erection
relflexes, turning off, arteries
- reflexe centres in spinal cord (input nerves in penis to sacral 2-4) (parasympathetic)
- input from brain to thoracic/lumbar regions (T11-L2) (sympathetic)
- can be turned off via psyo
- dialation of the arteries (blood goes in)
Ejaculation
impulses, contractions
- impulses go to ejaculation centres
- expulsion of semen
- rythmic contractions moves the semen
- contraction of bulbocavernosus muscle at base of penis
orgasm
- total body response with rapid release of sexual tension
- ejaculation and orgasm sometimes happen at the same time
