Definition of strong hypnotics:
Hypnotic drugs, also known as sleep medications or soporifics, are a class of psychoactive substances primarily used to induce sleep or promote sleepiness.

Methohexital
Propofol
Midazolam

What are the effects of strong hypnotics on the respiratory system?
Possibility of respiratory depression
Increased risk of sleep apnea
Impaired respiratory reflexes
What are the effects of strong hypnotics on the haemodynamic level?
Hypotension
Possibility of cardiac depression
Clinical use of strong hypnotics? Routes of administration?
- Oral, IV, transdermal patch, sublingual
- Various types of insmonia and sleep disorders
- Certain drugs such as midazolam can be used in anxiolysis
- Used for sedation of patients
- Certain drugs are used for induction and maintenence of anesthesia
What should a doctor do when a patient is using strong hypnotics for general anesthesia?
Monitor the following: ECG, HR, BP, O2 saturation, respiratory rate, capnography etc.
May need to establish airway management for example endotracheal intubation
Calculate dosage
Provide pre-operative and post-operative care
