Strong and Weak acids Flashcards
1
Q
In aqeuos solutions what happens to the acid molecules?
A
- Acid molecules split (ionise) and release H+. `
2
Q
What is a strong acid?
A
- Fully ionise in aqeuos solutions.
- Arrow goes in one direction only.
3
Q
What are 3 examples of strong acids?
A
- Hydrochloric acid.
- Sulfuric acid.
- ## Nitric acid.
4
Q
What are weak acids?
A
- Partially ionise in aqueous solutions,#
- ## Reversible reaction.
5
Q
What are 3 weak acids?
A
- Carbonic acids.
- Ethanoic acids.
- Citric acids.
6
Q
The Ph Scale:
A
- Gives us the idea of the concentration of hydrogen ions.
- Strong acids have a lower Ph than weaker acids for a given concentration.
- As ph scale decreases by 1 unit the concentration of hydrogen ions increases by 10 times.
- ## 10 x difference- One order of magnitude.
7
Q
What is the concentration of acids?
A
- Amount of acid molecules in a given volume of solution.
- Dilute acid: Fewer acid molecules in a given volume than an concentrated acid even if the strength of the acid is the same.
