Properites of Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Ionic Lattices:
A
- Every positive ion is surrounded by negative ions.
- Have very strong forces of attractions between the positive and negative ions.
- ## Electrostatic forces.
3
Q
What is the first property?
A
- very high melting and boiling points.
- Strong electrostatis forces of attractions.
- Requires alot of energy to break.
2) Ionic Compounds cannot conduct electrcity when they are solids.
3
Q
What is the second property?
A
- Ionic compounds cannot conduct electricity when solid.
- Ions are locked into place by the strong electrostatic forces of atttractions.
- So cannot move meaning they can’t carry the charge.
4
Q
What is the 3rd property?
A
- Ionic compounds can conduct electricity when they are melted or dissolved in water.
- Ions are able to move so carry the charge.
