Metals and Alloys Flashcards

1
Q

What IS metals?

A
  • Consist of giant structures of atoms.
  • Arranged in regular layers.
  • Electrons in the outer shell of each atom are delocalised.
  • This creates a sea of delocalised electrons.
  • Metals loose outer electron.

Q

What is the 3rd property of metals?

A
  • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricty.
  • delocalised electrons can move.
  • Electrons are charged so can carry electrica; currents and thermal energy.
    so can conduct heat.

Q

What is an Alloy?

A
  • Mixture of metals.
  • Different sizes of atoms distort the layers.
  • More difficult to slide other eachother.
  • Alloys are harder than pure metals.
