Bonding in Polymers Flashcards

1
Q

What are polymers?

A
  • Made by joining together thousands of small, identical molecules (monomers).
  • Monomers are often alkene molecules e.g Ethene.

Q

Monomers to Polymers:

A
  • Monomers have a double covalent bond.

- Polymers have a single covalent bonds with bonds attached to no element at the ends.

Q

How do we draw the repeating unit?

A
  • Show a single covalent bonds between elements.
  • Covalent bonds at either side has to extend out the brackets.
  • The little n states that the polymer contains a lot of repeating units.

Q

What is the first property of Polymers?

A
  • Solids at room temperature.
    (most).
  • Intermoleculuer forces of attractions between polymer molecules are relatively strong.
  • Takes a lot of energy to break
= High melting + Boiling Point.
