Bonding in Polymers Flashcards
1
Q
What are polymers?
A
- Made by joining together thousands of small, identical molecules (monomers).
- Monomers are often alkene molecules e.g Ethene.
2
Q
Monomers to Polymers:
A
- Monomers have a double covalent bond.
- Polymers have a single covalent bonds with bonds attached to no element at the ends.
3
Q
How do we draw the repeating unit?
A
- Show a single covalent bonds between elements.
- Covalent bonds at either side has to extend out the brackets.
- The little n states that the polymer contains a lot of repeating units.
4
Q
What is the first property of Polymers?
A
- Solids at room temperature.
(most). - Intermoleculuer forces of attractions between polymer molecules are relatively strong.
- Takes a lot of energy to break
= High melting + Boiling Point.
5
Q
What is the second property
A
