Electrolysis Flashcards
1
Q
What happens when an ionic compound is melted or dissolved in water?
A
- Forces of attractions are broken and ions are able to move.
- Liquids and solutions can conduct electricity.
- These liquids or solutions are called:
- Electrolytes.
2
Q
Structure of electrolysis?
A
- 2 electrodes (made of a conducting material).
- Negative electrode= Cathode (covered in electrons).
- Positive electrode = Anode (Lack of electrons).
- Positive ions are attracted to the Cathode.
- Negative ions are attracted to the Anode.
3
Q
What happens to the positive ions?
A
- gain electrons to form an atom.
- (reduction).
4
Q
What happens to the negative ions?
A
- Loose electrons to form the atom.
- Oxidation.
