Electrolysis Praticle Flashcards
What is the purpose of the praticle?
- What happens to aqeuos solutions when undergoing electrolyosis.
What is the method for Copper Chloride?
1) Pour 50cm^3 of copper chloride solution into a beaker + Place plastic petri dish over the beaker.
2) Insert a graphite rod into each hole (unreactive so these electrodes are inert).
3) Connect the rods to the terminals of a low-voltage power pack (select 4V on power supply and switch on).
4) Negative electrode= Coated with copper.
Anode= Bubbles of gas (chloride is a halide ion than halogen is released which is chlorine gas).
5)
What happens if we hold a piece of damp blue litmus paper near the anode?
- Becomes bleached.
-
Method but using Sodium Chloride solution:
1) Pour 50cm^3 of sodium chloride solution into the beaker.
2) Turn on voltage of low power supply.
3) Anode= Bubbles of gas.
(Bleaches the damp litmus paper so telling us the gas is chlorine).
4) Cathode= Gas Bubbles Sodium is more reactive than hydrogen so hydrogen is released.
- Test it using a lint splint and if it pops.
