Acids and Alkalis + bases and Alkalis Flashcards
1
Q
What do we write when writing the formula for an acid?
A
- (aq)
- Aqueous Solutiom.
Dissolved in water
2
Q
In aqueos solutions what do acids produce?
A
- in aq solutions acids produce hydrogen ions (+),
3
Q
What is a base?
A
- Chemicals that can nuetralise acids producing salt and water.
- Usually metal oxides or metal hydroxide.
4
Q
What are alkalis?
A
- Bases which are soluable in water.
-
5
Q
In aqeuos solutions what does alkali’s produce?
A
- Hydroxide ions.
6
Q
What is the PH level?
A
- Tells us the acidity of alkalinity of a solution.
7
Q
Scales of the PH levels:
A
Acids: 0-6
Ph 7= Neutral.
Alkaline= 8-14
8
Q
How can we determine the PH of a solution?
A
- Using a PH probe- determines ph electronically.
- Universal indicator- Changes colour depending if an solution is an acid, alkaline or neutral.
Red= Acidid.
Purple= Alkaline
Green= Neutral.
9
Q
What is the neutralisation reaction between an acid and an alkaline?
A
- when we react an acid and alkaline:
- ## Hydrogen ions react with hydroxide ions to produce water.
10
Q
Nuetralisation reaction:
A
- H+ + OH- –> H20
