Making Soluable Salts Flashcards
What equipment is used for making soluable salt?
- Beaker.
- Gauze.
- Tripod.
Heatproof mat - Bunsen burner.
Method:
1) Start with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid. This is our limiting reactant.
- We don’t want any acid in the end as it will contaminate the salt.
2) Gently heat acid until almost boiling ( don’t want it to bubble over when we add other reactant).
3) Using a spatula to add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid.
4) Stir using a glass rod. Copper oxide will react and seem to dissapear. (solution will turn blue colour of copper sulflate).
5) Continue add copper oxide if the solution continues to be clear blue.
6) Stop adding copper oxide if some powder remainds after stirring.
What does it mean if the copper oxide remains in the copper sulflate?
- Reaction has stopped.
- All acid has reacted.
how do we make crystals of the salt?
- EVaporation/
- Place solution on evaporating basin and heat gently over a beaker of boling water.
- Heat until around half of the solution remainds.
- leave solution for 24 hours in a cool place for crystals to form.
- scrape crystals on paper towel and gently pat them dry.
How do we remove the unreacted copper oxide from the copper sulflate solution?
- Filteration.
