Stroke Syndromes Flashcards
Symptoms of total anterior circulation infarct (TACI)
Contralateral hemiplegia / hemiparesis, homonymous hemianopia and higher cerebral dysfunction such as aphasia and neglect
Arteries involved in a TACI
Anterior and middle cerebral arteries
Symptoms of lacunar infarct
Pure motor stroke, pure sensory stroke, sensorimotor stroke, or ataxic hemiparesis.
What is not affected in lacunar infarct
Visual fields, higher cerebral functions and brainstem function
What syndrome does Basilar artery occlusion present with
Locked in Syndrome
What is ‘Locked in Syndrome’
Quadriparesis, with preserved consciousness and ocular movements.
Syndrome caused by an anterior inferior cerebellar artery infarction
Lateral pontine syndrome
What is lateral pontine syndrome
Ipsilateral facial weakness, gait and limb ataxia, vertigo and unilateral ipsilateral deafness from labyrinthine artery ischaemia
Which nuclei does lateral pontine syndrome involve
V, VI, VII, VIII
What is lateral medullary syndrome
Infarct of vertebral and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries
What is lateral medullary syndrome also known as
Wallenberg’s syndrome
Presentation of lateral medullary syndrome
Ipsilateral Horner’s, loss of pain and temperature on face and contralateral loss of pain and temperative over body
What nuclei are involved in lateral medullary syndrome
IX and X
Posterior Circulation infarct symptoms
Cerebellar dysfunction, or conjugate eye movement disorder, or bilateral seonsory/motor deficits or ipsilateral cranial nerve palsy, with contralateral sensory/motor deficits or cortical blindness/isolated hemianopia
Arteries involved in posterior circulation infarct
Vertebrobasllar arteries, associated branches supplying cerebellum, brainstem and occipital lobe
