What is GB syndrome
Autoimmune acute inflammatory demyelinating polydadiculopathy only effecting CNS
Causes of GB syndrome
40% by Campylobacter jejuni, followed by CMV
Symptoms of GB syndrome
Symmetrical rapid onset of lower limb weakness, loss of tendon reflexes and autonomic dysfunction. Various sensory signs
Time course of GB syndrome
Spreads upwards over hours-days, symptoms progress for 2 weeks, plateau for 2-4 weeks then improve
Outcomes of GB syndrome
Bulbar weakness and respiratory failure in 20-30%.
5% die in acute phase
10% will have incomplete recovery
Supportive management of GB syndrome
Ventilation, measures to reduce VTE and CV support
Medical management of GB syndrome
Immunoglobulins (IgG) given in first 2 weeks, plasmaphoresis used within 4 weeks
