Risk factors for abscess
Middle ear and paranasal sinus infections, congenital cyanotic heart disease, endocarditis, recent dental treatment, immunosuppression, Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome
Symptoms of brain abscess
Non specific - headache, fever, seizures and/or neurological deficit.
Common organisms outside UK that can cause brain abscesses
Tuberculomas, cysticerosis, echinoccus, schistosomiasis, strongoloidiasis
Organism that can cause brain abscess from frontal or ethmoidal sinus
Streptococcus
Organism that can cause brain abscess from chronic mastoiditis/otitis
Bacteroides fragilis
Organism that can cause brain abscess from penetrating trauma or surgery
Staph aureus or enterobacteriacea
Organism that can cause brain abscess from congenital heart disease
Strep viridans and strep pneumoniae
Organism that can cause brain abscess from endocarditis
Staph aureus and strep pneumoniae
Organism that can cause brain abscess in immunosuppressed patients
Toxoplasma gondii, nocardia, mycobacteria, yeast and fungal abscesses
When is sugrery indicated in brain abscess
Confirm diagnosis, reduce associated mass effect, prevent intraventricular rupture, remove an associated foreign body, fungal or multiloculated abscesses
What part of the brain does TB meningitis affect
Base of the brain causing granulomatous inflammation and vasculitis
What type of meningitis does TB cause
Sub-acute or chronic
