what is a stroke?
an interruption of blood supply to the brain from trauma
thrombosis
formation of a blood clot (partial or complete blockage)
thrombus
A blood clot (blood hardens) that forms in a vessel
embolism
when an embolus (can be fat, air or blood) travels through the vessels from another area, often getting caught in narrow passageways
fibrinogen
protein in blood that helps platelets bind together
- increased w smoking, alcohol, & poor diet
risk factors for CVA x6
age = doubles every decade over 55y/o +, 2/3 stokes occur in 65 y/o +
race = doubles in African’s
sex = men > women
genetics = high cholesterol
disease = HTN (160/95) +, Heart disease, & diabetes
lifestyle = drugs, alcohol, or smoking
TIA - transient ischemic attack
lack of oxygen & usually goes away with 1-24 hours
- presents like a CVA w focal neurological symptoms
- “mini stroke”
