Stretching! Flashcards
What is flexibility?
the range of motion allowed by one’s joints
what is a MTU?
muscle tendon unit - skeletal muscle and tendons that are attached to the bone
What is Ankylosis?
when joints don’t move like they used to
not enough mobility
what is Laxity?
an unstable joint
2 types of stretching
Static - holding a position that is at one end of the ROM of a joint
can be passively or actively
Dynamic - the ability to move a join quickly and fluidly without resistance
What affects your range of motion?
- joint structure
- connective tissue
- muscle tissue
- lossing flexability
- injury/disease
- body composition
- gender
- age
what limits joint flexability?
joint capsule - 47 %
muscle - 41%
tendon - 10%
skin - 2%
PNF stretching
Combining contraction and relaxation of agonist and antagonist muscles
Ballistic stretching
swinging or bouncing
this works towards increasing range of motion
what do propriceptors do?
nerves that sense when the muscle is stretching, transmits to the brain
Why should you stretch?
stretching a muscle after an activity is good
can be done during warmup or cool down, productive during cool down
always warm up before performance
