what is body composition?
it tells us what our weight consists of and is a ratio between the fat and the fat-free body mass.
made up of 2 components: Fat-free mass and fat mass.
Fat mass: essential fat (normal functioning) and storage fat (protects the organs, non-essential)
Body fat deposition patterns
Men tend to build up body fat around the waist, round apple shape - android
Women tend to build up body fat around the hips and upper thighs, pear shape, (gynoid)
what is “ideal weight”
no such thing
sometimes, people create sources for an ideal weight by using height to calculate it.
Assessing body composition: BMI
- BMI (body weight index)
kg/m
does not measure body fat, but correlates with it
not appropriate for older people or pregnant women
not reliable
if you have a high BMI, raises the risk of getting type 2 diabetes
Assessing Body composition: Waist circumference (WC)
measuring fat around the waist
the higher WC, the higher BMI
risk of developping health problems if your WC is hight
Waist/ Hip girth ratio
Circumference of hip and waist
- provides an index of relative fat distribution
Skin folds
pinch test of skinfold caliper use
filled with lots of errors, usually testing requires lots of takes, then put into an average
Hydrostatic weighing
a way to weigh yourself underwater
X-ray absorptiometry
expensive, but it works
