what is stress?
a state of tension/pressure; the body and mind’s reaction to everyday demands/threats
what is a stress response?
a built-in biochemical reaction producing hormones that have specific physical effects
what is eustress? ex.
the good stress - taking a vacation
what is distress?
the bad stress - studying for a hard test
what is a stressor?
anything that causes stress
what does GAS stand for?
general adaptation syndrome
what is GAS?
a model that describes the relationship between stress and disease
what is the first stage of GAS? what are five symptoms?
alarm stage - “fight or flight”. pupils dilate, adrenaline and cortisol, muscles tighten, heart rate and BP go up, digestion slows
what is the second stage of GAS?
resistance stage - body tries to repair damage from the alarm stage and returns to normal state
what is homeostasis?
regained internal balance
what is the third stage of GAS? what happens to your body?
fatigue/exhaustion stage - when a person can’t get back to homeostasis. body becomes physically ill because the immune system slows
“psycho” refers to-
the mind
“somatic” refers to-
the body
what is being psychosomatic (me)?
the mind is making the body sick (mind-gut coordination)
what is stress tolerance?
the amount of stress you can take before it becomes too much
