Stress and illness Flashcards
Describe the stress as a stimulus approach
Identifying stressful situation and determining how and why they have adverse effects on psychological and physiological processes
What is the problem with stress as a stimulus approach?
Large variations in the effects of environmental stressors and therefore there are large individual differences in response to such environments
Describe stress as a response
Response which is shown in an adverse or stressful situation
What are the 3 stage processes in GAS (Stress response) ?
Initial alarm reaction stage
Resistance stage
Exhaustion
Describe stress as a perceived threat
Stress is not associated with a specific stimulus or specific response but arises when an individual perceives and evaluated a situation as threatening.
Which gland plays a central role in regulating the responses of an animal to the threats and demands imposed by it?
Adrenal glands
What is the initial response to stress brought about by biologically?
Increased activity of the sympathetic system & catecholamine secretions of the adrenal medulla
What would happen on a biological level if stress persists?
Adrenal cortex will increasingly involve the hypothalamus + release of a series of hormones
