Skin senses Flashcards
What are the 3 main layers of the skin?
Epidermis
Dermis
Hypodermis
What is the function of epidermis?
Waterproof, protective wrap
Barrier for infection
What is the function of the dermis?
Cushions the body from stress and strain
How is the epidermis connected to the dermis?
Through the basement membrane
What is the function of the hypodermis?
Attach the skin to the underlying bone and muscle as well
Supplies the skin with blood vessels and nerves
If a stimulation is created on the right side of the body, where will the information end up?
Left sensory cortex in the parietal lobe of the brain
If a stimulation is created on the left side of the body, where will the information end up?
Right sensory cortex in the parietal lobe of the brain
What is the function of Merkel cells?
Sensitive to light touch
Provides information on pressure, position, and deep static touch features such as shapes and edges
What is the function of Meissner Corpuscles ?
Responsible for transmitting the sensation of fine, discriminative touch and vibration
What is the function of Pacinian corpuscles?
Responsible for sensitivity to vibration and pressure
What is the function of the thermoreceptors?
Sensitive to temperature
What is the function of nocireceptors?
Detects noxious stimuli and by extent pain
Pain receptors
They do not go into the epidermis
