Overwhelming sensitivity to smells
Such as in pregnancy, migraines
What is the olfactory epithelium?
Small, yellowish patch of tissues
Located on the roof of the nasal cavity
What are the 2 pathways of smell processing?
Conscious Identification
Emotional Response
What is conscious identification?
Signal directed to the frontal lobe which allows us to consciously recognise the smell
What is the emotional response?
Signal goes directly to the limbic system.
Connects smell with our emotions and memories
If the odor is associated with danger, it quickly activates your sympathetic system - fight or flight
What is anosmia?
Complete or partial loss of the ability to smell
