stress 2 Flashcards
What is Karoshi
death from overwork
How does stress cause karoshi
the release of cortisol over a long period of time causes the immune system to shut down, inhibits inflammation and reduces the number of white blood cells to reduce so you are more susceptible to cancer
Stress also clogs the arteries (which prevents blood from getting to the heart quickly) which might be the cause for heart attacks
What is the role of telomeres during stress
telomere’s are located at the ends of chromosones and decrease in size every time they duplicate, when there are no more telomere’s the cell stops duplicating.
so telomere lenght is linked to the lenght of someones lifespan
stress accelerates the shortening of the telomere’s
What is the role of oxytocin
it reduces the stress response (caused by cortisol)
relaxes the blood vessels and regenerates the heart from stress related damage
released during positive social interactions
Which hormones are released by your adrenal gland and what is their effect?
cortisol
adrenaline
norepinephrine
adrenaline causes heart to beat faster and raises blood pressure
what happens when your brain activates your enteric/intestinal nervous system
causes butterflies in your stomach
disturbs the contractions of the gut, leading to IBS and increase gut sensitivity to acid (heartburn)
does stress affect your waistline
yes, cortisol can increase appetite (eat comfort foods) and those extra calories become deep belly fat
examples of how chronic stress sabotages your health
it dampens the function of some immune cells, more susceptible to infections and slower to heal
