streptococcus, enterococcus, anaerobic cocci and lactobacilli Flashcards
Morphology of streptococcus
Coccus chain, (staphylococcus is buches), capsule, non-motile, facultative anaerobic, no spore,
fimbra on pyogens, sanguinus and salivarius.
Streptococcus staining
gram positive
Streptococcus culture
more fastidious so blood agar,
selective culture of crystal violet, thallium etc..
alpha or beta haemolysis
Streptococcus biochemistry
catalase - oxidase - fermenative,
glycosides - esculin and salicin
EC Enz - fibrinolysin, hyaluronodase, nuclease and protease.
Streptococcus antigens
complex, s.suis and s.pneumoniae has capsule antigens, lancefield A-W
Streptococcus species
**Pyogenes - scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, hu erysipelas
agalactiae, dysgalactiae, uberis - mastitis
dysgalatciae ssp. equisimilis - lymphandentis, abortion
equi ssp. zooepidemicus - sup, septicaemia
**equi ssp. equi, strangles
suis - meningitis, arthritis septacaemia
porcinus, - lymphandentis
canis - metrisis, septicaemia
pneumoniae - pneumonia
Enterococcus, Environment
intestines
Enterococcus culture
Can tolerate bile salts, macKonkey agar red pin point, 10-45deg, PH9.6, alpha haemolysis, posses cell wall D antigen
Enterococcus species
Faecalis, Faeciu, avium, gallinarium. mainly saprophytes may cause endocarditis.
Anaerobic cocci
Peptococcus - metritis arthrisis and pneumonia
peptostreptococcus - summer mastitis with s.dysgalatcius and A. pyogens
ruminococcus is a saprophyte.
Lactobacillus habitat morphology and staining
mucous membranes, gut, food, soil.
long thin rods which may be curved
gram positive
Lactobacillus culture and pathogenictity
Microaerophilic, PH5,5-6,2
optimal temperature 30-40
Saprophytic
Lactobacillus species
delbrucki ssp. bulgaricus delbrucki ssp.lactis acidophilis salivarius plantarum
