Bacillus Flashcards
Bacillus morphology
4-5um rod, central spore, capsule, no flagella on anthracus but there is on the others.
Staining bacillus
Gram positive, toulidine blue gives a pink membrane.
pathogenicity bacillus
Obligate pathogen, capsule has D-glu polypeptides, polysaccharide in hapten wall, cross reaction with B. cerus
Culture
Simple
liquid is cotton looking
rough and smooth, smooth in 10-15% CO2 capsule.
Spore in a carcass?
No it needs - 15deg, water and O2
Metabolism
Active, catalase + oxidase -
Virulent factors of B. anthracus
Plasmid coded - Odema and lethal factor, protective antigen
How resistant is the spore?
decades in environment, 2 weeks in skin, 4 weeks in bone
species of Bacillus
Anthracis, cerus, lichiformus, paenibacillus larvae, subtilis, megaterium, thuringiensis.
Species affected by B. anthracis
Mainly herbivores, car quite resistant, birds completely resistant.
Eq; subacute, oedema, colic, enteritis and septicaemia.
Su; oedema esp in pharyngeal area, intestinal more lethal form is less common.
Cattle and sheep; peractute septecaemic anthrax
Hu; skin pulmonary and intestinal form.
B. cerus
mastitis in cow, eye infection in Hu
B. lichiformus
abortion in cow and sheep
B. thuringiensis
pest control
