Strep Tests Flashcards
What are the six strep tests?
- bile esculin test 2. BHI + 6.5% NaCL test 3. CAMP test
4. Bacitracin susceptibility test 5. SXT susceptibility. test 6. Hemolysis
What is the purpose of the bile esculin test?
to determine if your organism can hydrolyze esculin in the presence of bile
What is the application of the bile esculin test?
identify enterococci and other group d strep
What media is used for the bile esculin test?
bile esculin agar
What is found in bile esculin agar?
peptone (nutrients), bile (inhibit gram + bacteria except enterococci and group d strep), ferric citrate (color indicator), esculin (substrate)
What is the inoculation guide and incubation for the bile esuclin test?
loopful streak on slant; standard
What is the theory of the bile esculin test?
esculin turns into glucose/ esculetin, ferric citrate –> dark brown precipitate
What are the results of the bile esuclin test?
(+) dark brown (-) no change
What is the purpose of the BHI 6.5% NaCL test?
to determine if an organism will grow on BHI + 6.5% Nacl
What is the application of the BHI 6.5% NaCL test?
ID enterococci (+) VS group d strep (-)
What is the media used for BHI 6.5% NaCL test?
brain heart infusion + 6.5% Nacl broth
What is the inoculation and incubation for the BHI 6.5% NaCL test?
loopful, standard
What are the results of the BHI 6.5% NaCL test?
(+) growth
(-) no growth
What is the purpose/ application of the CAMP test?
identify Streptococcus agalaciaea
What media is used for the CAMP test?
blood agar
What is the inoculation guide for the CAMP test?
Streak Staphylococcus CAMP at the bottom of the blood agar, streak a lawn on upper half of BAP with your organism, make two streaks of your organism perpendicular to SAC.
What is the incubation of the CAMP test?
standard
What is the theory of the camp test?
synergistic affects of staphylococcus aureus camp and streptococcus agal. produce a unique arrow pattern
What are the results of the camp test?
(+) arrow pattern
(-) no arrow pattern
What ist he BAC application?
ID BAC sensitive Strepto. pyogenes
What are the BAC results?
S: ZOI > 10 mm
R: ZOI < `10 mm
What are the SXT results?
S: ZOI present
R: ZOI not present
What other three tests can be used during the CAMP test?
Hemolytic patterns, BAC and SXT
