Epidemiology Flashcards
Pathogen
disease causing microorganism
Host
Organism that harbors the pathogen
Communicable disease
can be spread directly or indirectly from one host to another
non- communicable disease
cannot be transmitted from one host to another (when body is weakened or wounded, pathogen infects)
Epidemiology
science of when/ where disease occur and how it spreads
Epidemiologist
compile data on the incidence of the disease and method of transmission. try to locate the source of infection in order to decrease the incidence
Epidemic disease
many people in given area acquire the disease in a relatively short period of time
Endemic disease
constantly present in the population (pneumonia)
Index case
first reported patient in a disease outbreak
Case definition
should include list of symptoms of patients
droplet infection
microorganisms are carried on liquid drops (cough/sneeze)
Contact with contaminated inanimate objects (fomites)
ex: drinking glasses, bedding, towels contaminated with pus, feces, etc
Vectors
insects that carry pathogens
ex. flies fete, feces to food
Biological transmission
transmission by bites
reservoir
continual source of infection
