Blood Typing Flashcards
What are blood types based on?
Carbohydrate antigens on the surface of RBC
What is hemagglutination?
Clumping of RBC
How is blood typing tested?
using specific known anti-sera (antibodies)
What antigens and antibodies does blood type A have?
Antigens: A
Antibodies: B
What antigens and antibodies does blood type b have?
Antigens: B
Antibodies: A
What antigens and antibodies does blood type AB have?
Antigens: AB
Antibodies: N/A
What antigens and antibodies does blood type O have?
Antigens: N/A
Antibodies: AB
What is the Rh factor?
based on the presence or absence of D antigen (complex 5 antigens)
Rh+:
D antigen is present, no d antibodies ever
Rh-:
D antigen is absent, naturally no D antibodies
Erythroblastosis fetalis:
- Rh(-) mother is pregnant with and Rh(+) baby
- during delivery, baby/mother’s blood mixes
- mother produces d-antibodies, and is now desensitized
- mother is pregnant with second Rh(+) baby
- mother’s d-antibodies crosses placenta and attacks baby’s blood—> still birth
What is the solution to Erthroblastosis fetalis?
RhoGAM
