Strength Flashcards
Static strength
The ability to apply a force against a resistance without any movement occurring (isometric contraction). Muscle length remains constant
Dynamic strength
The ability to apply a force to overcome a resistance where movement occurs (isotonic contraction). Muscle length changes
Strength endurance
The ability to sustain repeated muscular contractions (for a single isometric contraction) over a period of time
Maximal strength
The ability to produce a maximum amount of force in a regular muscular contraction
Explosive/elastic strength
The ability to produce a maximal amount of force in one or a series of rapid muscular contractions
Factors that affect strength
Muscle fibre type make up/ fibre recruited
1A is endurance
2A/2B maximal/explosive
Cross section area of the muscle
Larger then cross section, greater the strength of contraction
Strength endurance reps sets and resistance
15-20 reps
3-5 sets
50-75% of ORM
Maximum strength reps sets and resistance
1-5 reps
3-5 sets
85-90% of ORM
Explosive strength reps sets and resistance
6-10 reps
4-6 sets
75-85% of ORM
