When was the London Olympics?

Where will the regeneration take place?
East London in Stratford. It will be in parts of the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Hackney.
Why was regeneration needed?
High levels of deprivation
Severe lack of affordable housing
High crime rates
High rates of unemployment
How much unemployment was there in the area?
Unemployment rate in August 2010 was 12.9% compared to the England average of 7.8%
How did closure of the London Docklands affect the area?
120,000 jobs losses with 60% of males adults being unemployed. This lead to a spiral of decline from people leaving the area.
How was infrastructure invested in?
New Stratford link on the Jubilee line, connecting to central London and opening greater job opportunities.
Large football stadium built. It was already claimed by West Ham but can also host world events.
How were environmental impacts reduced
Re-used 97% of materials from demolition.
Transported materials by rail - rail has a lower carbon footprint than using lorries.
Large amounts of open space for wildlife and residents.
How was the area improved socially?
Olympic village was created after the Olympics which provided 3,000 new homes.
50,000 long term jobs created.
Temporary jobs created such as construction workers - allows people to gain skills for future jobs.
How did building Olympic Village improve the area?
Accommodation for athletes was turned into housing, creating 3,000 affordable homes.
What was different about Olympic Parks design compared to past Olympics?
It was designed to be usable after the Olympics finished. Sports arenas were repurposed for public use.
The Copper Box has become a public multi-sport venue
The London Aquatics Centre is now a public swimming pool.
Positives of the rebranding
31,000 jobs created from FDI
Repurposed Olympic venues attract 80,000 visitors per year.
The target to cut 100,000 tonnes of carbon was met.
Additional £2.5 Billion of inwards investment, over half of which was invested outside of London.
Negatives of the regeneration
Only 1,200 homes out of 3,000 from the Olympic village were turned into affordable housing.
A wind turbine that was going to be created and power 20% of the games was scrapped.
Cost of living has increased massively - 69% increase in Hackney.
Over 200 businesses had to relocate with many demanding compensation.
Many people were outpriced of new housing causing communities to be separated.
