History of Portland Road
Notorious for slums in the 1950s.
In some cases 50 people would be in 1 house.
Landlords couldn’t afford to re-invest meaning the area grew more rundown.
What caused the area to start to improve.
Abolishing of the 1957 rent control act meant landlords could increase rent. This caused increases in rent, driving poorer people from the area and drawing in more wealthy people.
This started gentrification of the area, attracting more wealthy residents and starting the multiplier effect
