St. Ives Flashcards
How many people commute to London every day?
1/4 of the population
How has the population changed
from 3,800 in 1961 to 16,400 in 2010
How have house prices changed?
The average house price rose from £130,000 to £290,000 between 2000 and 2010.
Causes problems as original residents cannot afford these prices but commuters can.
Issues with increasing population.
High housing demand has caused developments built on flood plains. This can cause flood risk during heavy rainfall.
Increase of families is putting strain on schools.
Congestion issues
Lots of traffic along the A14 in rush hour due to commuters going to/from work.
How is St. Ives being managed to reduce issues?
Expand primary schools.
Building flood protection - new embankments and flood walls.
Cambridge guided busway - old railway line developed so converted busses can use it to get between St. Ives and Cambridge. Aims to reduce traffic
2010 plans for 200 new homes including 75 affordable homes.
