Lamb Drove, Cambourne - SuDS Flashcards
Where is Lamb Drove?
West Cambridge
What is Lamb Drove?
A residential development of 35 affordable homes in Cambourne.
Why did Lamb Drove need drainage?
A lot of Cambridge is on low-lying land meaning flooding can be a problem
What were the aims to the SuDS scheme? (2)
Showcase practical and innovative sustainable water management in residential areas.
Demonstrate the viability of SuDS over conventional drainage.
What techniques were used to sustainable manage drainage?
Water butts
Permeable paving
Green roofs
swales (shallow open channels)
detention and wetland basins
a retention pond
How do water butts help manage drainage?
Reduces water reaching the river by collecting it. Water from butts can be used for garden irrigation.
How does permeable paving help manage drainage?
Decreases surface runoff, allows water to be stored in rock and filters pollutants.
How does green roofs help manage drainage?
Reduces runoff and increases biodiversity.
How do swales help manage drainage?
Collects excess water, slowing flow of water as well as increasing biodiversity.
How does detention and wetland basins help manage drainage?
Slows down runoff as well as providing short term storage for water during extreme flood events.
How does the retention pond help manage drainage?
Final storage of water before water is released from the drainage system. Means that water is released at a steady rate, helping to reduce flood risk.
What concept was used for the SuDS
A management train meaning water management was considered from when it landed to when it left the site.
Why is the concept of a management train good?
Considers the area as a whole to incrementally improve the water quality and control runoff quantity as water moves through the area.
Successes of Lamb Drove
Improvements to biodiversity and quality of life
Demonstrated effectiveness of SuDS
Improved water quality
Cost savings of £11,000 (10%)
Negatives of SuDS
SuDS will have higher maintenance than conventional drainage.
SuDS require more planning than conventional drainage.
For SuDS to be most effective, they need to be considered at the start of development.
