Jurassic Coast Landforms Flashcards
What landforms are at Chesil Beach
Barrier beaches (lagoons behind) and a tombolo connecting to the Isle of Portland.
How has Houses on Chesil Beach on Isle of Portland been protected
Special “mattress gabions” have been placed to provide protection while retaining natural appearances and not disrupting natural processes.
What landforms are on Isle of Portland
Raised beaches, stacks, marine platform (raised wave cut platform), blowholes.
What landforms are at Durdle Door
Arch, examples of refraction
Swanage bay
A eastern facing bay on a discordant coastline between two chalk and limestone headlands
Man o’ War Cove
It has near vertical bedding planes meaning the rock has no weak points. This has left small islands of rock that has still not been eroded at the mouth.
Types of coastline along Jurassic Coast
South facing area is a concordant coastline whereas east facing is discordant.
How do discordant and concordant coastlines affect the Jurassic Coast?
Discordant forms coves like Lulworth and Man o’ War. Concordant forms bays and headlands like Swanage bay and old harry rocks.
Lulworth Cove
Formed from a weak spot in hard limestone at the front of the coast allowed waves to eventually erode into softer rock behind, forming a cove.
Old Harry Rocks
Chalk headland at the north of Swanage Bay. Vulnerable to high energy waves leading to the formation of stacks (Old Harry), stumps (Old Harry’s wife), arches, wave cut platforms.
Bedrock folding
When bedding planes twist . Stair Hole, Man o’ War Cove, Durdle Door have folding strata.
