Stomach cells (extra bit) Flashcards
six cell types
1) simple columnar mucous cells
2) Mucous neck cells
3) undifferentiated stem cells
4) Parietal cells
5) Chief cells
6) enteroendocrine
Simple columnar mucus cells
surface and pits. Secrete;
1) mucous coat (traps HCO3- from parietal cells= protective barrier)
2) enriched phospholipid in membrane barrier?????
3) UD stem cells: that migrate and replace surface cells
how can the mucous coat be degraded
Helicobactor Pylori 1-urease of bacteria convert urea>ammonia which degrades mucous coat 2- toxins damage epithelium - Ulcerogens (PAF)
Prostoglandins
Protective, stimulates mucous and phospholipid production.
Especially E2
Mucous neck cells
Soluble acidic alycoproteins secreted when food present
Parietal cells
- HCl
1) sterilise food
2) acidify environment (chief cell pepsinogen > pepsin) cleaves proteins
-Intrinsic Factor (B12 absorption)
less HCl means
less digestion(pepsinogen not cleaved) less bacteria kill (gastroenteritis)
Vitamin B12 important for
RBC haematopoiesis.
Low parietal cell activity > low IF > pernicious anaemia
