stock forms and standard components Flashcards
what forms are timber available in
-planks
-strips
-mouldings
-boards
features of different forms of timber
PSE timber has rough surfaces shaved off with an electric planer to give smooth surfaces and sharp corners
- Rough sawn timber is not smoothed after its cut, so its cheaper and useful for construction work where it wont be visible
- mouldings are strips that come in a range of cross sections , used for door frames
- manufactured boards are usually available in 2240 x 122
- common thickness are 4, 6, 9, 12
why are metals commonly available in different sizes
because it can be difficult to convert on shape into another
examples of forms of metals
tubes
examples of forms that polymers can come in
- sheets tubes and rods - which can be cut to size and bent
- foam - which can be used for protective packaging and making models and mock ups
- films - used for vacuum forming and for use in windows in packaging
- granules - can be melted down and used in casting and moulding
- powders - can be used in some types of mouldings and coatings
what are screws used for
- to grip the metal, making a strong, tight fixing in wood, metal and plastic
- used for fixing shelves, mirrors to doors
what do screws and nuts and bolts do and what are they usually made of
they join things together
- made from steel, brass, stainless steel and are plated with zinc, brass or chrome
features of wood screws
- often require pilot holes to be drilled before the screw is inserted
- as the screw is turned by a screwdriver, the thread pulls into the wood
- different types of head are available for different jobs (eg round, countersunk, slotted, cross heads)
features of self drilling screws
- have hardened threads and a tip like a drill bit
- used to drill their own threaded holes in hard materials such as metals and hard plastics
- they don’t require a pilot hole to be drilled before they’re inserted
features of machine screws
- have a threaded shank and are used with washes and nuts, or in a hole with matching threads
- used to join metal parts together
features of nuts and bolts
- used to join thin materials like sheets of metal or plastic
- only useful if you can get to both sides of the machine you’re joining
- used to join parts of machinery
- bolts are similar to machine screws but have a square or hexagonal head that can be tightened with a spanner
what is a rivet and advantages
- a metal peg with a head on one end
- used for joining pieces of metal
- fast and easy method of joining metals
how do pop rivets work
- metal pin is inserted through the hole in the centre of the pop rivet
- both river and pin are places in the hole through the materials
- the pin is pulled tight with a riveter till it snaps
- pulling the pin tight squashes and spreads the end of the rivet, forming a head on the blind side
what are the 4 types of hinges and what are their features
- butt hinges - one part of the hinge is set into the door and the other part is set into the frame - available in brass or steel
- pivot hinges - allows you to lift a door off a frame - hinge is made from two parts that fit together - one part is screwed to the door, the other to the door frame
- tee hinges - used outside for things like shes doors or garden gates, often covered in black enamel
- flush hinges - screwed directly into the surface of the wood, so they are easier to fit than butt hinges. usually used for lightweight jobs
what are knock down fittings
temporary fittings that allow furniture to be assembled and taken apart easily
- fast to use
- not as strong as glued joints
