Q

features of different forms of timber

A

PSE timber has rough surfaces shaved off with an electric planer to give smooth surfaces and sharp corners

  • Rough sawn timber is not smoothed after its cut, so its cheaper and useful for construction work where it wont be visible
  • mouldings are strips that come in a range of cross sections , used for door frames
  • manufactured boards are usually available in 2240 x 122
  • common thickness are 4, 6, 9, 12

Q

features of wood screws

A
  • often require pilot holes to be drilled before the screw is inserted

A
  • have hardened threads and a tip like a drill bit
  • used to drill their own threaded holes in hard materials such as metals and hard plastics
  • they don’t require a pilot hole to be drilled before they’re inserted

Q

features of nuts and bolts

A
  • used to join thin materials like sheets of metal or plastic
  • only useful if you can get to both sides of the machine you’re joining
  • used to join parts of machinery
  • bolts are similar to machine screws but have a square or hexagonal head that can be tightened with a spanner

16
Q

features of scan fittings

A
  • a cylinder with a screw thread inside is put into a ready made hole
  • a screw is then put into a second part and screwed into the cylinder, pulling both parts together
  • used with materials such as plywood where the screw wouldn’t grip well
17
Q

features of CAM locks

A
  • used to join sides of cabinets to the top and looks quite neat
18
Q

features of single and two piece blocks

A
  • plastic blocks used to join parts at right angles
  • easier to attach in tight corners and can be undone if required
  • often found holding up shelves in wardrobes
19
Q

features of dowels

A
  • wooden rods that are pre cut to length
  • used with glue to give more contact area to the joint and make it stronger
  • glue gives them a permanent fixing
  • often used to attach shelves to cabinets
