2
Q

why are materials with tight weave best to print on

A

because they have a smooth surface for the dye to be applied to and no surface pattern to detract from the design

3
Q

how can you make your own printing block

A
  • drawing a pattern on a piece of wood then cutting the background away, leaving the design raised
  • you can stick pieces of card or string onto a solid block
  • buy rubber blocks with designs already on them

Q

block printing process

A
  • printing ink is applied to the raised surface of the block
  • the block is then pressed down onto the fabric
  • leaving a reversed image on the fabric

Q

pros and cons of block printing

A

pros
- can print with different colours using the same block
- can use several blocks to build up a more complicated design
- can easily repeat designs
- can use the same block many times before it wears out

cons
- not good for fine detail
- making the blocks takes a long time

Q

flat bed screen printing process

A
  1. the screen is a frame with fine mesh covering it
  2. a stencil is cut from card or acetate by hand or using CAD OR CAM and putting beneath the screen
  3. printing ink is poured onto the screen
  4. a squeegee is pressed down and drawn across the screen, forcing the ink through the mesh and the holes in the stencil
  5. the screen is lifted up and the design is left on the fabric

Q

pros and cons of flat bed screen printing

A
  • can produce repeated intricate patterns accurately
  • good for printing large areas of colours
  • easy to use many colours
  • printing is quick to do

DISADVANTAGES
- making the screens and stencils takes a long time
- each colour has to be applied separately

Q

pros and cons of industrial screen printing

A
  • intricate patterns using many colours can be repeated accurately
  • machinery makes process quicker
  • large amounts of fabric can be printed at once
  • computer controlled makes it quicker

DISADVANTAGES

  • setting up commercial machinery is expensive
  • screen making takes a long time, unless it’s used doing CAD CAM

Q

how are electrical components usually sold

A

Electrical and mechanical components:
• sold by quantity, volt and current rating
• standard components eg E12 resistor series,
dual in line IC packages (DIL), microcontrollers (PIC).
