shaping material Flashcards
different types of saws and their uses
- hacksaw - for metals and plastics
- rip saw - for cutting wood along the grain
- tenon saw - for making straight cuts in small pieces of wood
- coping saw - for cutting curves in wood or plastic
tips when using a saw
- use the whole length of the blade so that some teeth don’t wear out faster than others
- don’t press too hard or the saw may jam in the material and may damage the blade
- sand or plane rough edges
features of chisels
- used to cut away and shape wood and metal
- gougers are used for sculpting
- cold chisels are hit with a hammer and are used for metals
features of a bench plane
has an angled blade that shaves off thin layers of material and is used in wood for shaping
features of files and the cuts theyre used for
- have hundreds of small teeth to cut away a material
- rough cuts are for removal of material, - fine cuts are used for final smoothing
- most files are meant for metal and woods
what are special files with very coarse teeth called
cabinet rasps
features of abrasive paper
- eg sandpaper
- rubbed against the material u wanna smooth
- often wrapped around a sanding block so an even pressure can be applied to give a better grip
- range from coarse to fine
- can be used on wood, metal polymers
what is a bradawl
a tool that helps you drill in the right place by leaving a little dent where you’re gonna drill
- only used on woods and plastics
examples of drill bits and their
twist bits - used to drill small holes in wood, metal, plastics
flat bits - used on wood and plastics and woods to drill large, flat bottomed holes
countersunk bits make holes for countersunk screw heads to sit in
hole saws are used to make big holes in thin material
tips when using drill bit
- hold it firmly in a bench hook, vice or clamp
- keep fingers out of the way
- be aware of any exposed blades, carry the tools safely
- goggles to stop shavings getting into eye
