Sternoclavicular Joint Flashcards
SC joint
only direct attachment of the upper limb to the axial skeleton
the joint is:
saddle-shaped synovial joint between the proximal clavicle and the clavicular notch of the manubrium of the sternum and 1st costal cartilage
with a fibrous articular disc is interposed between the joint surface
degrees of freedom?
3 degrees of freedom
physiologic motions
elevation/depression
protraction/retraction
axial rotation
elevation
distal clavicle elevates (proximal clavicle depresses)
depression
distal clavicle depresses (proximal clavicle elevates)
protraction
BOTH ENDS move anteriorly
retraction
BOTH ENDS move posteriorly
axial rotation
clavicle rotates about its long axis
most rotation is posterior
sternal articular surface
large and convex in the coronal plane
small and concave in the sagittal plane
clavicular notch
shallow and concave in coronal plane
small and convex in the sagittal plane
Ligamentous Support of the SC
Sternoclavicular Ligaments
Interclavicular Ligament
Costoclavicular ligament
Sternoclavicular Ligaments
attach from the clavicular notch to the medial end of the clavicle
- anterior limits posterior rotation and retraction
- posterior limits anterior rotation and protraction
Interclavicular ligament
runs along the jugular notch attaching to the medial ends of both clavicles
-limits clavicular depression
“hold shoulder up”
costoclavicular ligament
runs from the medial clavicle to the 1st rib and associated costal cartilage and manubrium of sternum
- limits clavicular elevation
the clavicle must:
elevate and rotate for normal upper limb elevation
sensory innvervation to the SC joint is by way of:
subclavius and supraclavicular nerves
C3-C4 ventral rami
SC arthrokinematcis
clavicular elevation/ depression
clavicular protraction/ retraction
clavicular roation
Clavicular elevation
convex clavicular head rolls superiorly and glides inferiorly on disc
Clavicular depression
convex head rolls inferiorly and glides superiorly
Clavicular retraction
concave articular surface of clavicle rolls and slides POSTERIORLY on the convex surface of the sternum
Clavicular protraction
rolls and slides ANTERIORLY on the sternum
Clavicular rotation
convex head spins of the concave clavicular notch
