Sternoclavicular Joint Flashcards
SC joint
only direct attachment of the upper limb to the axial skeleton
the joint is:
saddle-shaped synovial joint between the proximal clavicle and the clavicular notch of the manubrium of the sternum and 1st costal cartilage
with a fibrous articular disc is interposed between the joint surface
degrees of freedom?
3 degrees of freedom
physiologic motions
elevation/depression
protraction/retraction
axial rotation
elevation
distal clavicle elevates (proximal clavicle depresses)
depression
distal clavicle depresses (proximal clavicle elevates)
protraction
BOTH ENDS move anteriorly
retraction
BOTH ENDS move posteriorly
axial rotation
clavicle rotates about its long axis
most rotation is posterior
sternal articular surface
large and convex in the coronal plane
small and concave in the sagittal plane
clavicular notch
shallow and concave in coronal plane
small and convex in the sagittal plane
Ligamentous Support of the SC
Sternoclavicular Ligaments
Interclavicular Ligament
Costoclavicular ligament
Sternoclavicular Ligaments
attach from the clavicular notch to the medial end of the clavicle
- anterior limits posterior rotation and retraction
- posterior limits anterior rotation and protraction
Interclavicular ligament
runs along the jugular notch attaching to the medial ends of both clavicles
-limits clavicular depression
“hold shoulder up”
costoclavicular ligament
runs from the medial clavicle to the 1st rib and associated costal cartilage and manubrium of sternum
- limits clavicular elevation
