stereotype, prejudice, disc.
stereotype (cognitive, Lippman 1922, gives us info on how to act; categories are useful heuristic) is the idea of a social category, knowledge of that group. Prejudice (affect) evaluates that stereotypes. Discrimination (behvaior)is acting on the prejudice.
benevolent sexism/hostile
B: paternalism (men should take care of women), complementary gender diffs (women are better gender, but only in ways that align w role), intimate heterosexuality (men need a woman to be happy)
B makes women think they’re more incompetent compared to H, bc women don’t resist it as much
H: paternalism (men should control women), complementary gender diffs (men are superior), intimate heterosexuality (women should be virgins)
changing strong stereotypes
members must have interactions,
equal status,
must pursue common goals,
context should promote equality among members,
members must show counterstereotypical behavior
contact and prejudice
not necessarily helpful for reduction
