stem cells Flashcards
define stem cells
unidentified cells that become differentiated into any kinds of cells in he body, they are often used to replace old cells when they wear out and die
what can stem cells do?
scientists believe that stem cells could help change how patients are treated by modern medicine. They have the potential to create more individualized treatments while helping scientist understand how probelms occur.
what are the three kinds of stem cells
- tissue specific stem cells
- pluripotent stem cells
- multipotent cells
define tissue specific stem cells
these are stem cells found in all people and are used to replace cells in many tissues as they wear out and die.
define pluripotent stem cells
these cells can become any kind of tissue in the body and can divide indefinetly, unlike tissue specific stem cells.
define multipotent cells
a cell that can give rise to multiple different types of cells typically found in specific tissue.
ethical issue involved
- requires the use of fertilized embryos.
there are two conflicting morals:
1. the desire to protect human life
