- microbe is spread through secretions or shedding lesions

syphilis, chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, chancroid

genital herpes and warts, AIDS

prevalence
A
higher risk in women, often internal (cervix and vagina) -> not easily detectable
lower risk in men, often external (penis) -> easily detectable

A
high risk factors: high risk sexual practices, ETOH, IV drug use, smoking
low risk factors: monogamous relationship
no risk: abstinence
