- herpes simplex virus type III
neurotropic microbe -> prefers neural cells
infects neurons (host cell) - systemic, recurrent infection (virus becomes latent and the infection is resurfaced at later dates)

transmission
A
via contact with lesions and secretions, and virus is spread systemically

incubation period
A
2-10 days

manifestations
A
- asympt (still can transmit if pt is asympt)
- no obvious symptoms until 3-7 days post contact
- fever, myalgia, pain

type of lesion
A
- shedding lesion: vesicles
- lesion excretes bodily fluid containing the virus, increased potential for disease transmission and infection

treatment
A
- no cure
- antivirals (acyclovir)
- sympt management
