Statistical methods Flashcards
applied research
refers to scientific study and research that seeks to solve practical problems Applied research is used to find solution to everyday problems.
Basic research
Is systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts
Hypothesis
an educated guess that derives from a theory or a prediction that can be tested
theory
a broad idea or set closely related ideas that attempt to explain observation
Experiment
A treatment is deliberately imposed on the individual in order to observe a possible charge in the response or variable being measured
operational definition
states the exact prodeure used to represent a concept or how a variable is going to be measured nd observed in a particular study
survey
people opinion & beliefs
response (participants) bias
a general term for a wide range of tendencies for participants to respond inaccurately or falsely to questions.
social desirability bias
the tendency to underreport socially undesirable attitudes and behaviors and to over report more desirable attributes
response rate
is the number of people who answered the survey divided by the number of people in the sample.
Naturalistic observation
when you describe an individual in its natural setting
Observational study
used to answer a research question based purely on what the researcher observes.
case study
study of one individul in depth in hopes tht findings will generalize to all people
cross sectional study
study different groups of people at the same time
Longitudinal study
a special kind of systematic observation used by correlational study / reserach that involves obtaining measures of the same variable over time
correlational study
examines the realationaships between variables how two variables change together
Meta-analysis
a method that allows researchers to combine the results of serveral diffrent studies on a similar topic in order to establish the stregnth of an effect
descriptive statistics
involves methods of orginization picturing and summarizing info from samples or population
inferential statistics
a sample or pridiction regarding the population
positive correlation
a relationship between two variables in which both rise and fall together.
negative correlation
a relationship between two variables in which an increase in one variable is associated with a decrease in the other.
correlation coefficient
varries from +1 to -1 tells direction ad magnitude of correlation
Scatter plot
lines of besti fit/ regression line
