States of Matter Flashcards
Describe matter
anything that has mass and volume
What is matter made up of?
tiny particles called atoms and molecules
Describe Viscosity
is the liquids resistance to flow
Describe the States of matter
the physical forms in which a substance can exist
- solid
- liquid
- gas
What determines the state of matter?
the way particles interact with each other helps determine the state of the matter
Describe surface tension
is a force that acts on the particles at the surface of a liquid
Describe gel
is a liquid that has tiny particles of a solid suspended in it. This type of substance is known as a colloid
Describe exothermic
energy is lost or removed during the change or state
Describe exothermic and Endothermic
Exothermic- energy is lost
Endothermic- energy is absorbed
What is a change of state
it is the change from one physical form to another
- all changes are physical changes
Describe Charle’s Law
If the temperature of a gas increases, the volume of the gas also increases by the same amount
Describe Boyle’s Law
As the pressure of a gas increases, the volume of the gas decreases by the same amount
Describe particles in a liquid
Move fast enough to overcome some of the attraction between particles
Are close together but can still slide past one another
Describe Liquid
a state of matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container
Describe particles in a solid
Don’t move fast enough to overcome the strong attraction between them
Stay close together and vibrate in place
Describe Solid
is the state of matter that has a definite shape and definite volume
Describe sublimation
is the process when matter changes form a solid directly to a gas state
Describe Evaporation
is the change of state from the liquid state to the gas state
Describe melting
is the change of state form solid to a liquid
Describe Condensation
is the change of state from a gas to a liquid
Describe freezing
is the change of state from a liquid to a solid
Describe particles in a gas
move fast enough to overcome the attraction between them
particles are far apart and move independently of one another
Describe gas
is a state of matter that has no definite shape or volume
Describe SECFM
S- Sublimation E- Evaporation C- Condensation F- Freezing M-Melting
What are some factors that cause gases to behave?
Temperature
Volume
Pressure
Describe volume
the amount of space an object takes up
Describe mass
the amount of matter in an object
