State Changes Flashcards
Learn about melting and boiling points.
What is the state change from a solid to a liquid called?
Melting
What is the state change from a liquid to a gas called?
Evaporating or boiling.
What is the state change from a gas to a liquid called?
Condensing
What is the state change from a liquid to a solid called?
Freezing
What is the state change from a solid to a gas called?
Sublimation
What is the state change from a gas to a solid called?
Desublimation
What three things happen during a state change?
Energy is transferred to or from the particles.
The arrangement of particles changes.
The movement of particles changes.
A substance is a __ below it’s melting point.
__ above it’s boiling point.
__ between its melting and boiling points.
A substance is a SOLID below its melting point.
GAS above its boiling point.
LIQUID between its melting and boiling points.
Are forces of attraction greater in a gas or a solid?
Solid
Which state changes transfer energy to the surroundings?
Freezing, condensing and desublimation.
Which state changes occur when energy is transferred to the particles?
Melting, boiling and sublimation.
What is evaporation?
When a substance changes from a liquid to a gas below its boiling point. Particles with high enough energy leave the surface of the liquid, the remaining particles have less energy
Bromine melts at -7 degrees Celsius and boils at 59 degrees Celsius.
Predict the state of bromine at 25 degrees Celsius.
Liquid.
Describe, in terms of particle theory, what happens when bromine boils.
Forces of attraction between bromine particles are overcome and the particles move far apart. The particles no longer just move around each other, but move quickly in all directions.
