Instrumental methods Flashcards
1
Q
instrumental methods
A
use machines to detect and analyse substances
2
Q
advantages of instrumental methods
A
offer improved:
- sensitivity, can detect very small amount of different substances
- accuracy, measure amounts very precisely
- speed of tests, carry out each analysis quickly, can run all the time
3
Q
flame photometry
A
-instrumental method of analysis based on flame tests
- measures the light intensity of the flame colours produced by metal ions
- separates the flame colours to produce an emission spectra
4
Q
What can the data from a flame photometer do?
A
- identify the metal ions present in the sample
- compares the spectrum with a reference spectrum from a known substance
-determine the concentration of ions in a solution using a calibration curve
5
Q
disadvantages of a flame photometer
A
- more expensive
- can only be done where there is a machine
