Standpoint Theory Flashcards
Stand point
A place from which to view the world that determines what we focus on as well as what is obscure to us.
Says that all scholarly inquiry should start from the stand point of those who are being marginalized.
Marginalization
Marginalized groups or people are those related or confined to lower social standing. These people or groups are separated from (and often not considered part of) society.
Material Deprivation
When people are deprived from food, shelter, services, programs, and policies.
Objectivity
Marginalized people have more objectivity because they almost live in a completely different world from the rest of us.
Who founded stand point theory?
Karl Marx and Frederic Engles
Said the poor can be societies ideal knowers.
Standpoint theory champions marginalized people for two reasons.
1) People with subordinate status have greater motivation to understand the perspective of power groups than vice versa.
2) Marginalized people have little reason to defend their status quo.
Esentialism
Talks about everybody in a certain group thinks a certain way.
