Affiliation
The felling of contentedness you have with others.
Relationships
The interconnections between two or more people.
Interdependence
When what we do affects others and what others do affects us.
Control
The ability of one person, group, or organization to influence others and the way in which their interactions are conducted.
How is distribution of control worked out?
Through how people talk with each other, what they say, and when they interact.
What are the six elements of communication?
1) The extent to which the message is SYMBOLIC
2) The extent to which the CODE is shared
3) The degree to which the message is CULTURALLY BOUND
4) The sender’s perceived INTENTIONALITY
5) The presence of a CHANNEL
6) The degree to which the encoding and decoding of messages are TRANSACTIONAL
Symbol
Arbitrary constructions that refer to objects: people, things, and ideas.
Code
A set of symbols that are joined to create a meaningful message.
Encoding
The process of mentally constructing a message- putting it into a symbol that can be sent to someone.
Decoding
The process of interpreting and assigning meaning to a message that gets received.
Culture
the shared beliefs, values, and practices of a group of people.
Co-cultures
Smaller groups of people within a larger culture that are distinguished by features such as race, religion, age, generation, political affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, educational level, occupation, and a host of other factors.
Channel
The method through which communication occurs.
Transational
When people exchange information in both sender and receiver roles and their messages are interdependent- influenced by those of their partner- and irreversible.
Communication outcome
The product of an interchange.
