Q

Define the McGurk effect.

A

When what we see effects what we think was are hearing. When we can only hear the audio input, we hear what we hear, but when it is paired with a visual, our brain tries to make the audio match the visual. I.E. When the guy in the lecture video was saying, “Ba ba ba” the whole time, but then the screen displays a video of a man who appears to be saying, “fa fa fa”. The audio hasn’t changes at all. The audio message is still, “Ba ba ba” but our brain practically forces us to think the audio is saying, “fa fa fa” because that is what our eyes see.

Q

What is critical theory?

A

Deals with power structures and power hierarchies.
This theory asks the question, “How do people get power over others? And how do people continue to exert that power over them once they have it?
The theory argues that people exert power over others through space.
So there is a connection between how much power and how much space one has.
