Define non-verbal communication
The process of intentionally or unintentionally signaling meaning through behavior other than words.
Define repeating
Some communication that mirrors the verbal message without words.
Define complementing
Nonverbal behavior consistent with the verbal message.
Define accenting
Clarifying and emphasizing specific information in a verbal message.
Define substituting
Using means other than words to communicate what word would do (in a situation where words may be unavailable for some reason)
Define contradicting
When you convey without words the opposite of the meaning of the words you are conveying.
Define interaction management
Managing the impression and regulating the interactions of communicators.
Define regulate
Coordinating verbal interaction.
Define immediacy
A feeling of closeness, involvement and warmth between people.
Define deception
The attempt to convince others of something that is false.
Define nonverbal codes
Symbols w use to send messages without or in addition to words.
Define Kinesics
Gestures and body movements that send nonverbal messages.
Define emblems
Substitutes for words that have a more definition-like meaning for people that use them.
Define illustrators
They reinforce verbal messages and visually explain what is being said. (Holding our hands two feet apart while saying, “this big”)
Define regulators
Help us manage interactions. (tasing your hands and lifting your head, for example, indicates you want to speak)
Define adaptors
These satisfy some physical of psychological need. (rubbing eyes when tired, or twist hair when nervous or bored)
Define affect displays
Nonverbal gestures that convey feelings, moods, and reactions.
Define masking
Replacing an expression that shows true felling with an expression that shows appropriate feeling for a given interaction.
Define paralanguage
Nonverbal behaviors that accompany the the words we speak but are vocalized as additional sound. (I.E. pitch, tone, and volume.)
Define haptics
The use of touch to send messages.
Define chronemics
The use fo time in nonverbal communication- like when your boss is late for a meeting ( indicating that they have more power than you and they can do whatever they want )
